LAC VAN TRAN - Sr VP & CIO to Rush University Hospital

Training as an athlete from the time he was a young boy, Lac learned some very valuable lessons that he used to sustain himself from his earliest childhood challenges throughout the trauma of being a prisoner of war during the Vietnamese conflict.

Tran, a South Vietnamese pilot trained in the U.S. was one of the first of the boat people to escape the communist regime after the fall of Saigon.  Following a harrowing six-month ordeal he landed in America with only the clothes he wore.  Despite his loss of home and country, he quietly set about the tedious process of starting over and starting over he did

  • Senior Vice President, CIO and Associate Dean at Rush University Medical Center
  • 20 years as CIO at large healthcare institutions including University of Dayton Research Institute, Wilford Hall Medical Center, State University of  New York at Stony Brook Health Sciences and Medical Center, Harvard Medical School Boston Children’s Hospital, and Baylor College of Medicine Methodist HealthCare Systems
  • One of the pioneers in networking image processing (especially in medical and aerospace medicine)
    • His security and networking expertise is exemplified through his role in the development of the Medical Casualty Tracking Systems; this project was nominated for the Commander-in-Chief’s Excellence Award
    • His image processing has been recognized throughout the Refractive Laser Research community
  • One of the pioneers in applying the optical card and smart card technology in healthcare
  • One of the pioneers in designing / developing first Healthcare Clinical Repository / Data Warehouse Packages
  • One of the pioneers in advocating the Medical Informatics Program
  • One of the pioneers in implementing Web page technology for healthcare content and literature (80’s)
